The idea for opening a cupcake shop came while on vacation, when Cherella and Thomas Lee first visited a SmallCakes location in Alabama. The national chain was founded in Kansas in 2009, and has grown to over 200 locations over that decade.Fast forward six years to 2019, when the Lee's dream was realized in downtown Spartanburg. SmallCakes Spartanburg officially opened their doors in October 2019, in the Royce Camp Building. (198 W Main St)In preparation for co-owning the business franchise, Cherella completed City of Spartanburg's Amplify African-American Business Accelerator program in July 2019, created to strategically aid minority businesses in success. Cohorts in the rigorous ten-week program learn budgeting skills, marketing, website creation, public speaking, and more. The sweetery's menu is extensive.On the SmallCakes roster, find 13 signature cupcake varieties and rotating daily features-- 250+ cupcake flavors and 75+ ice cream and milkshake flavors.
