Looking for a Bargain
December 20th is National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day, and everyone knows the sweaters with the most character are secondhand. Make sure you rock that office or brewery party this weekend with our thrifting tips below. You probably know about Goodwill and Salvation Army, but here's five local thrift shops, that also give back to the community! Our Local Recommendations:
- Brown Roof Thrift: 141 Fernwood Dr, Spartanburg 29307
Clothes on clothes on shoes on clothes! (Pictured above.) Funds from the shop are donated to five community missions and ministries, such as Mobile Meals and Backpack Buddies.
- Greater Spartanburg Ministries: 680 Asheville Hwy, Spartanburg 29303
Great for clothes and home goods. They also have a food pantry open for donations.
- Hospice Thrift Barn: 1810 SC-14, Landrum 29356
Fantastic furniture, home goods, and clothing selections, with a wide variety of men and women's sizes.
- Maggie's School Resale Store: 210 Cedar Springs Rd, Spartanburg 29302
Spartanburg's newest thrift store, with some of the best clothing prices-- most are $3-5! They also have a Greenville location, with both shops funding schools in Kenya and Cambodia.
- Not Your Average Thrift Store: 369 Whitney Rd, Spartanburg 29303
Not the largest clothing selection, but plenty of unique finds. They also sell furniture, home goods, and appliances. Get in; Get a bargain; Get out
- Keep an open mind! Thrift stores are a hodgepodge of unique items and sizes. If you go in with a singular expectation, you'll probably leave disappointed.
- Grab a cart; it's better to have one handy, than to end up wandering the aisles under a pile of hangars. Carrying sweaters can be a workout in itself.
- Try everything on. Different brands, especially vintage tags, fit differently than they look on the hangar. If you see something you like that appears the wrong size, there's nothing to lose from trying it on anyways; you might be surprised.
- Get creative. Mix and match basic pieces for a whole new creative look. Or, Find a basic sweatshirt or tee and hit your local craft store! Some of the most unique party looks are made with a hot glue gun, tinsel, and glitter puff paint.
