Get The Scoop: Five Must-Visit Ice Creameries InTheBurg

July 16, 2020 by InTheBurg

We don’t need a reason to enjoy a delicious ice cream sundae, but if you’re looking for an excuse, here’s a great one: July is National Ice Cream Month, and National Ice Cream Day is Sunday, July 19th.

Choosing which flavor to savor is almost as difficult as choosing a shop! Here’s five of our favorite creameries:

Big Ben’s Desserts & Ice Cream

297 Spartanburg Hwy, Lyman

Big Ben’s is your one-stop-shop for ice cream sundaes, handbaked brownies and cupcakes, milkshakes, Ben Hall’s famous banana pudding, and more. Build your own sundae, with a slice of signature cake and over 15 toppings to choose from. Stop by for a sweet treat, Tuesday through Saturday.

Read our full article on Big Ben’s here.

Buck ‘N Brew Coffee & Ice Cream

18981 Asheville Hwy, Campobello

“Have your [ice cream,] and eat it too” at Buck ‘N Brew. This specialty coffeeshop and ice cream parlor combo, has everything from hot fudge sundaes, handspun milkshakes, and cheerwine floats, to oreo frappes and sandwiches.

Check out their 24 flavors of ice cream, open daily. In a rush? They even have a drive-through!

Read our full article on Buck ‘N Brew here.

Hub City Scoops

158 East Main St, Spartanburg

Hub City Scoops has all sorts of ways to eat your ice cream: waffle cone, cake cones, ice cream sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, ice cream cakes, AND ICE CREAM FLIGHTS. Choose from nearly 60 rotating flavors— including non-dairy options, sugar-free flavors, and Italian ices and sherberts– from Wisconsin’s famous Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream.

Check out their exclusive National Ice Cream Day menu offerings here.

Hub City Scoops is open daily, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Or, enjoy your ice cream across the street with a stroll through the Denny’s Plaza gardens. They are also offering take-and-make kits, with your ice cream pints and toppings of choice.

Southern Delights & More

114 East Rutherford St, Landrum

Sweet tooth got a craving? Hungry for breakfast or lunch? Southern Delights has it all! Head to historic Downtown Landrum, and look for the green dino…

Grab a coffee and ice cream cone to-go, then stroll downtown’s many antique shop finds. Or, enjoy your sweet treats in the air conditioning, while playing one of the cafe’s many board game offerings. Southern Delights is open Monday through Saturday, 8am-4pm.

Strawberry Hill U.S.A.

3097 Hwy 11 West, Chesnee

Most people know Strawberry Hill U.S.A. for their fresh-picked buckets of strawberries, baskets of peaches, and other seasonal produce. BUT, right across the street, stop by the Country Cafe and Ice Cream Parlor. The cafe is open year-round for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Grab a Southern bite to eat and a dessert to-go, then eat your sweet treats in a rocker on the porch.

Strawberry Hill offers 12 homemade flavors and 18 Gifford & Hershey flavors, plus milkshakes, banana splits, root beer floats, fresh berry sundaes, and more. The Ice Cream Parlor is open daily, 10am-8pm.

New Spin On History: Exploring Drayton Mills

July 8, 2020 by InTheBurg

Local history, delicious food, relaxing and romantic atmospheres, handcrafted brews, corporate offices, luxury lofts, natural destinations, and more all exist at one location, right here in Spartanburg County: Drayton Mills. (1800 Drayton Rd)

Live, Work, Play: you can do it all at Drayton Mills.

The nearly 250 acre former textile mill campus was renovated in 2015, and is the largest historic restoration project in South Carolina, to date.

There’s plenty to explore at Drayton, but here’s a few of our favorite ideas:

Drink At Drayton Mills

Start your day at Drayton, with a coffee at Bella Latte. Attention to detail is clear, with hand-brewed pourover beverages, beautiful latte art, and their single-origin coffee beans, roasted in-house by Mozza Roasters. Relax inside under local art and industrial detailing, with the hum of the mint green Dietrich Roaster in the back of their warehouse, or enjoy your drinks on their shaded patio.

End your day at Drayton, with a local brew of a different sort, at Holliday Brewing. The local nanobrewery, run by brothers John and Jim Holliday, specializes in West Coast-style IPAs, but features a variety of house-brewed ales, lagers, stouts, in addition to rotating cider and sour guest taps and a full wine menu. Enjoy open mic nights on Wednesdays, trivia nights on Thursdays, and live music on the patio on the weekends. Or, take a bit of Holliday home, with a portable 32oz crowler of beer.

Exercise At Drayton Mills

Enjoy your lattes and craft beer guilt-free, with an intensive workout from Burn Boot Camp next door.

Focused on both cardio and strength-training, Burn offers customized 45-minute workouts and one-on-one sessions for every fitness level. The fitness community also offers free childcare during workouts and a nutrition program with your BBC membership.

Most importantly, Burn Boot Camp is a community focused around helping women feel comfortable and strong in their surroundings.

Explore Nature At Drayton Mills

If exercising outdoors or solo is more your speed, hop on the DAN Trail— Spartanburg’s 32-mile interconnected trail system.

Drayton Mills has two trail segments on either side of Drayton Road: The Lower Drayton Trail loop, and the Upper Drayton Trail that connects to Spartanburg Medical Center’s Mary Black Campus. Both trails are paved, making them accessible to bicycles, strollers, wheelchairs, and trail-users of all ages.

Find more Drayton Trail details here.

There’s plenty of nature to observe, both on the trails and on Drayton Mills’ campus. The mill pond– once necessary to the textile mill’s function– is now home to colorful fish, turtles, and a growing family of geese.

On the Drayton Trails, nature flourishes; a new bug species was even discovered on the trail recently by USC Upstate professor, Dr. Jon Storm.

Eat At Drayton Mills

After all that exercising and exploring, you’ve probably worked up quite an appetite! Good thing Drayton Mills is home to two delicious restaurants.

Pi-Squared Pizza features Detroit-style pizza– thick crust pizza, baked “upside down” in steel pans. Cheese and your toppings of choice are layered, with sauce added on top, leaving the pizza light and airy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Or, try their wings, subs, salads, and cheesy bread. Pi-Squared’s outdoor seating overlooks the mill pond, for the perfect sunset dining. View the menu.

If you’re looking for an upscale meal or brunch date, check out Dray: Bar + Grill. This dog-friendly gastro-pub features a newly-redone patio and firepit, “Snack Shack” walk-up window, live music outside, an extensive cocktail menu, Sunday brunch, and rotating dinner specials of their innovative comfort food. View the menu.

Speaking of cocktails,… $1 from every specialty, dog-themed drink is donated to the Spartanburg Humane Society. “Bartender, we’ll have another!”

Check out Dray: Bar + Grill’s upcoming events, music series, drive-in movies, and dog meet-ups on their Facebook page.

Live At Drayton Mills

What could be even better than experiencing all of these businesses by day…? Living just footsteps away, in a luxury loft apartment!

Drayton Mill’s loft apartments feature original details, such as expansive mill windows, soaring 17-foot tall natural wood ceilings, original maple hardwood flooring dating to 1902, with modern additions such as marble countertops and steel appliances, in 68 unique floor plans to fit your personal style. Drayton residents also enjoy unique perks on-campus, such as access to the private pool, two-story workout room, and dog park.

Three years in a row (2017-2019,) Drayton Mills Loft Apartments was voted “Best Apartment Community,” in Spartanburg Herald-Journal’s Best of the Best Awards. (We can see why!) Residents enjoy pet-friendly living and apartments with the Energy Star energy efficiency performance award.  Schedule a tour of one of their 289 luxury apartments today.

Relax At Drayton Mills

Remember when we mentioned a pool…? A 60-foot salt water lap pool, to be exact. Drayton residents can tan poolside, cool off with a dip in the water, and cook at the outdoor luxury kitchen.

Relaxation goes beyond the water at Drayton Mills though. Pamper yourself with a trip to the Lauren Ashtyn Collection salon, for a new haircut or customizable, world-famous clip-in extensions. Or, adjust your spine (and mindset) with a visit to Sparkle City Chiropractic. Or, spread out a picnic blanket on Drayton’s grassy lawn, to enjoy a takeout meal or beverage from the businesses on-site.

Celebrate At Drayton Mills

Drayton Mills’ beautiful, historic campus is also the perfect venue for your next event. 1800 Drayton Catering & Events is now booking dates for weddings (up to 500 guests,) private dinners and events (20-300 guests,) corporate parties, and photoshoots.

Learn At Drayton Mills

Throughout Drayton Mills’ campus, textile history can be found– in the original hardwood flooring, exposed brick walls of the loft apartments and business spaces, the two iconic water towers, and more.

“It is so rare, based on what we’ve seen, to come across a mill whose operators are still in existence,” Tara Sherbert, CEO of The Sherbert Group, said. “Pacolet Milliken did such a wonderful job of preserving this mill. It was shuttered in 1994 and it looks like it closed yesterday.“

Every step of the restoration process by Pacolet Milliken Enterprises Inc. and Charlotte-based partner, TMS Development, had to be approved by the South Carolina State Preservation Office and the National Parks Service.

The spinning mill, constructed in 1902, is an example of Romanesque Revival architecture that influenced textile mill buildings at the turn of the century, according to the mill’s historic places registration. Its frame is made entirely of heavy timber. The weaving mill, which was added some years later, is mostly made of steel.

In 2018, Drayton Mills was recognized with a Preservation Excellence Award, one of South Carolina’s highest honors for historic preservation.

We hope you enjoy your visit to Drayton Mills! Tag us in your experiences with @intheburg864 and @draytonmills.

Breast, Wing, Thigh- Oh My!

July 3, 2020 by InTheBurg

One thing Southerners take quite seriously– other than the sweetness of the tea– is their FRIED CHICKEN. Crispy breast portion or chicken tender? White meat or dark? Does boneless chicken even count?? Which part of the bird is the beak… err,… peak of perfection?

No matter how you slice, dice, or serve it, fried chicken is an experience, and one that Spartanburg does well. So we set out to find the best of the Burg’s fried chicken offerings– new concepts, family favorites, and Hub City icons alike.

Here’s the top ten chicken joints in Spartanburg, (in alphabetical order of course, because their rated order is up to your taste buds to decide.) Note: Chicken wings are a category all on their own, and this list features restaurants specifically of note for their fried chicken selections.

The Beacon Drive-In: (255 John B White Sr Blvd, Spartanburg)

This classic Spartanburg drive-in is nationally famous for many things– chili cheese “a-plenty,” onion rings piled high atop the burgers, the Beacon’s commercially-sold sweet tea, legendary local J.C. Stroble,… What you may not know is the delicious secret of The Beacon’s fried chicken plates. Customize your favorite pieces, or opt for a family takeout box of eight or sixteen pieces. Be sure to grab a gallon of tea and a peach cobbler to go with it!

Charlene’s Home Cooking: (1136 East Blackstock Rd, Moore)

Nothing says, “Cooking from the Heart,” like some Southern-style Soul Food, and Charlene’s Home Cooking is the place to find it. Chalkboard specials– ranging from fried chicken, to fried ribs, to oxtail– are updated on Charlene’s facebook page, varying by season and local availability.

Since 2013, this soul food favorite has wowed with both delicious Southern staples and hospitality. “This is more than just a restaurant or business to us. It’s a ministry,” says Charlene. “You could come in with nothing, and we’d hope to do something to make your day better.” Read more on Charlene Davis’ eatery here.

Duncan Family Restaurant: (159 West Main St, Duncan)

Duncan Family Restaurant is the definition of small town country cooking. In addition to their daily meat & three plates– including Southern fried chicken and boneless fried chicken breast– check out the daily specials, updated on their Facebook page. You might wait a hot minute for your chicken, but for good reason; it’s fried fresh to order.

Flavorshack Hot Chicken & Ribs: (2144 East Main St, Duncan)

Nashville hot chicken? Chicken pot pie?! Chicken and waffles?!? (Need we say more?)

Flavorshack is bringing the heat to Duncan, with everything from hot chicken sandwiches, to hickory smoked ribs, to crispy chicken tenders the size of your hand.

Pro-tip: Pair your hot chicken with a strawberry lemonade or margarita, and finish it off with a housemade pudding.

Flock Shop: (970 South Pine St, Spartanburg)

WHAT THE FLOCK?! Flock Shop is the newest concept from Hub City Hospitality, the team behind Willy Taco and Fr8yard. Enjoy their dry-brined, buttermilk, hot chicken in sandwich form, slathered in your sauce of choice, chopped over salad, covered in gravy and egg for brunch, or even suspended above a Bloody Mary cocktail– (yes, they went there.) And don’t forget the sides! In true Southern fashion, pair your fried chicken with pimento cheese mac&cheese, collard greens, smoked bacon and goat cheese grits, and more.

You can’t truly experience EAT DRINK FLOCK SHOP without a drink in-hand. In addition to their draft cocktails and craft beer selection, find an exclusive collaboration brew with RJ Rockers Brewery on tap. Every Rail Trail Pale Ale (5.3%abv, dry-hopped American pale) sold donates to enhancing the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail— the urban trail that Flock Shop is located on, which features rental B-Cycles, the Vic Bailey Subaru Bike Park, a Panthers Play60 playground, fitness equipment, the Rail Tail Dog Park, and more.

Hub City Chicken & More: (451 East Henry St, Spartanburg)

Hub City Chicken might be one of downtown Spartanburg’s best kept secrets. This local favorite has a quirky, country exterior, with some of the most delicious fried chicken served inside. Even better: There’s a drive-thru! Don’t forget the sweet tea and sweet potato crunch.

Pro-tip: Order the Chicken Pot Pie. Trust us. This pot pie is made fresh daily, with flaky pastry crust, and WILL sell out.

Lake Bowen Fish Camp: (8580 SC-9, Inman)

Whether you’ve spent an afternoon on the lake, or admired boats from afar, end the day with a tray of fried chicken and fish, piled high. Known locally as simply “the Fish Camp,” this Inman mainstay has been serving up their fried classics since 1979. While fish is their “cornbread and butter,” to say, don’t sleep on Lake Bowen’s fried chicken and chicken livers! They also make a mean chicken stew.

Mustard Seed BBQ & Country Cooking: (2000 SJ Workman Hwy, Woodruff)

Is any Soul Food restaurant complete without fried chicken? Mustard Seed offers up crispy chicken, BBQ, and all the fixin’s, served buffet-style in Woodruff.

Wade’s Restaurant: (1000 North Pine St, Spartanburg)

Spartanburg natives may know Wade’s from Sunday meat & three lunches, from Wade’s original South Pine Street location, or even from their clever vegetable pun billboards. This Spartanburg family classic has been serving up their Southern plates since 1947, famous for their yeast rolls and Wade’s Famous Fried Chicken! “When you’re hungry for homemade,… Eat at Wade’s.”

Woodward’s Cafe: (1928-2005)

While Woodward’s Cafe is sadly no longer in business at 438 Stevens St, the legend of its fried chicken lives on STRONG in the minds and bellies of Spartanburg residents. We’d be remiss to not acknowledge this historic favorite, which was nominated for Southern Living‘s best fried chicken in Spartanburg.

Woodward’s was known for its homestyle dining, with everything on the menu made from scratch. The 1928 cafe was one of the oldest Black-owned businesses in the City of Spartanburg, and closed in 2005 after a kitchen grease fire.

“It was quite interesting how people would come there to eat and enjoy just being there – no matter what race they were,” said James Talley, former Spartanburg mayor. Whitmire [Woodward’s second generation owner] “had something that drew people together where they weren’t concerned about blacks and whites eating together or sitting together,” he said. Read more of Robert Woodward, Charles “Spot” Whitmire, and Woodward’s Cafe’s legacies here.

And there you have it, the top ten highest rated fried chicken spots in Spartanburg! Check out these local eateries, and show some small business love.

Did we miss your favorite restaurant? Do you have memory of Spartanburg restaurants past to share? InTheBurg wants to hear from you! Send us an email at idea@intheburg864.com.

Black Lives Matter InTheBurg

June 21, 2020 by InTheBurg

On the first day of Summer, June 20th, 2020, in the spirit of Juneteenth, local artists and community volunteers gathered in downtown Spartanburg to create the largest mural in the Downtown Cultural District.

“BLACK LIVES MATTER.”

This BLM street mural is the first of its kind in South Carolina, modeled after similar murals in Washington D.C. and Charlotte, North Carolina. The 240 ft long mural is located on West Broad Street, across from City Hall. (145 W. Broad St)

Organized by Frankie Zombíe, Councilperson Erica Brown (District 6,) and community partners, the privately funded mural was proposed to City Council with no objections. Frankie Zombíe assisted in painting Charlotte’s mural the week prior to organizing Spartanburg’s mural, and gathered fifteen other artists to paint the mural in a single day, from 9am-7pm.

  • View drone video footage of the completed Black Lives Matter mural, by Hub City Bees.
  • View progress photos of the mural painting, by Tim Kimzey for GoUpstate.com.

Darion Fleming of Charlotte was another artist who helped with both Spartanburg and Charlotte’s murals. “This needed to be painted and voiced,” Fleming said. “Art is really good at doing that, especially public art. I really hope it brings the community together. That is what we saw in Charlotte when we did it there.”

Showing Support: Black-Owned Businesses InTheBurg

June 2, 2020 by InTheBurg

Article written and curated by Genna Contino, for the Spartanburg Herald-Journal; originally published June 2nd, 2020

When Cherella Lee was growing up she didn’t know many black business owners. That’s what makes owning a Main Street storefront in her hometown of Spartanburg even more special to her.

Lee and her husband, Thomas, now co-own Smallcakes in downtown Spartanburg, a cupcake franchise that’s grown in popularity over the past year since its October 2019 opening.

Now, Lee sees a lot more black business owners like herself, and takes pride in that.

“I just believe it’s important to support black-owned businesses, because we are a vital part of the community,” Lee said.

Over the weekend, Spartanburg and the rest of the United States have seen protests in response to the death of George Floyd and years of police brutality across the country.

Amid a pandemic, many on social media are encouraging those who don’t feel safe to enter crowds to donate to bail funds for arrested protesters, speak out and to support black-owned businesses.

“Support businesses. Small businesses, black businesses, all businesses,” Lee said. ”’Cause we need it.”

New Ways To Play

May 18, 2020 by InTheBurg

The Dr. T.K. Gregg Community Center is nearing completion in the City of Spartanburg’s Northside neighborhood, with construction on the 47,000 sq.ft. facility set to finish by July 1st.

The center will feature a community meeting room, gymnasium and mezzanine level walking track, two pools– recreational and for swimming laps, a workout room, and computer lab.

Assistant City Manager, Mitch Kennedy said the new center, named in honor of Dr. Theodore K. Gregg, who was an African American doctor in the city, will help transform the city’s Northside neighborhood while serving the broader community.

Wanda Cheeks-Holmes, who currently serves as the Director of the Northwest Community Center, and is a Northside Voyager and Partners for Active Living board member, will lead as Director of the new center.

The opening date of the Dr. T.K. Gregg Community Center will be determined by local governance and CDC recommendations for social distancing at that time.

Read more on the future opening date and final construction details here at GoUpstate.com.

Cinco de Mayo in Spartanburg

May 4, 2020 by InTheBurg

Cinco de Mayo may look a little different this year with social distancing measures, but at the holiday’s core, it is an opportunity to celebrate the culture of Mexico! On May 5th, 1862 during the Franco-Mexican War, the Mexican army defeated France at the Battle of Puebla.

Did you know? The largest Cinco de Mayo celebrations are held in the United States, while Mexico favors celebrating with festivals for their Independence Day on September 16th.

Spartanburg is home to many Latinx residents and business owners, and while the annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Festival (presented by Mezcal Taberna Mexicana and City of Spartanburg Special Events,) and Willy Taco‘s “Willy de Mayo” event, have both been canceled this year due to Coronavirus and social distancing measures, you can still celebrate our Mexican neighbors’ culture from home!

(Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Festival has been rescheduled for September 5th, 2020, to coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month.)

Crack open a cold Corona beer, pour yourself a crisp margarita, mix up some cinnamon horchata, and order a meal from one of these local Mexican restaurants to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, with cuisine ranging from Authentic, to Tex-Mex, to Mexican Fusion:

Uno.) Mezcal Taberna Mexicana, 143 West Main St, Spartanburg

Mezcal features tapas-style small plates with traditional Mexican ingredients and flavors, such as empanaditas, tostadas, and ceviche. This week only, they are offering $5 bottles of their signature margarita mixes, for you to cheers Cinco de Mayo from home. (Tequila not included.)

Family-friendly, El Mex’s kids plates are just $5 each.
